The X Factor attracts 1.75m Facebook fans

The X Factor has proved a social media success story for ITV, with 1.75m Facebook fans and 59,000 Twitter followers, according to figures released today by the broadcaster and its online content partner, TalkbackThames Digital. 

Nearly 20m TV viewers tuned in to watch Joe McElderry snatch The X Factor title and a £1m recording contract, cheered on by mentor Cheryl Cole. 

Social networking shared in the success, with 1.75m fans of the series on Facebook and 20,000 Facebook app downloaded. Up to 50,000 comments were recorded on the social network each weekend of the competition. This was accompanied by 59,000 Twitter followers and 230,000 live comments on ITV.com by the end of the series. 

Views for ITV.com’s X Factor page grew 22 per cent to 95m and unique users were up 77 per cent to average 821,000 across the series. 

Video views of the series topped 30.5m, up 61 per cent on last year. Across the past weekend, the site received 1.9m clip views, up 18 per cent on last year. 

Kate Bradshaw, deputy MD and head of online commissioning at ITV.com, said, “A 61 per cent increase in video consumption is testament to the superb quality of the show and the demand for interaction online with these kind of events.” 

Robert Marsh, head of TalkbackThames Digital, said, “The X Factor audience is increasingly keen to have more content and more engagement with the programme beyond the TV screen.”
