Bebo expands across Europe

Bebo is to launch five new European-language versions of its social network, marking the company’s first major expansion outside the English-speaking world.

From Monday users will also be able to choose French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

The company already runs a Polish language version of its site, and last week launched a Latino version in a bid to increase its reach in the US market.

Bebo’s international vice president, Nicole Vanderbildt, said: “We think there are lot of opportunities in the Western European market, both for user potential and for monetisation. International expansion is a key part of our growth strategy.

AOL-owned Bebo has more than 22 million users worldwide, almost half of them in Britain. However, comScore data indicated that over the past year, Bebo slipped from third to eighth position in the global social networking market.
