Physical skills for the digital age

Software designers have been brushing up on their skills in the physical world, according to a report.

Adobe designers have been attending workshops aimed at reminding them of attributes of objects in the physical world - skills they can translate back into their software design.

The New York Times reported that around 100 Adobe designers have been getting to grips with plastic beads, small electronic displays, water glasses and tiny sensors to "create wacky motion games".

It also pointed out that in a normal working day "about the only thing these folks touch on the job is a computer mouse".

Michael Gough, a vice president for design at Adobe, said that the idea was initially met with scepticism.

"The experience has started to inform how they work, giving them a better appreciation of how customers experience Adobe's programs," he told the newspaper.

Adobe software includes CS and Lightroom.
