Future of e-newspapers mooted

An online newspaper article has pondered the future of the printed word against the growing popularity of ebooks.

The Guardian asked if Amazon's Kindle ebook was becoming the iPod of those who like to read on the move - or even at home - using digital technology.

It suggested that the cost of the Kindle was slightly prohibitive because most people would not beat their book-buying expenditure by investing in it.

However, it added that if the Kindle could also become a newspaper reader then it might be a more attractive prospect as the cost would be recouped within months.

It concluded: "While the Kindle might be Amazon's iPod, I reckon the iPhone is more likely to be Apple's Kindle - at least until e-newspapers take off."

The article also noted, hoever, that "the Kindle has been very successful by ebook standards" and its projections for this year have been doubled by Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney.

Amazon's Kindle can hold around 200 non-illustrated titles in its memory and also plays mp3s.
