Surfing at work 'unacceptable for some'
21-08-2008

Creative digital employees who surf the net at work should be aware of a new poll of marketing executives.

The survey, by Creative Group, revealed that 41 per cent of marketing executives think that surfing the internet on work time is a no-no.

However, 57 per cent said that the practice is not only part of the job but acknowledged a culture of personal surfing during work hours - though an average time of around half an hour was deemed to be an acceptable time for personal use.

Megan Slabinski, executive director of Creative Group, said: "In the creative field, surfing non-work sites may be considered part of the job because it allows professionals to keep up with trends and seek new sources of inspiration."

She added that employees who did surf for personal or work-related reasons should be cautious around visiting inappropriate websites and be aware that many companies monitored internet use.

Many companies large and small have internet and email policies and employees who flout the rules could face disciplinary procedures.
