Sports editor suspended

A newspaper sports editor has been suspended pending enquiries into alleged financial irregularities, according to reports.

The People's Lee Horton has been sent home on full pay while investigations are made into "the possible misappropriation of a six-figure sum in false payments for stories", the Guardian reported.

A spokesperson for Trinity Mirror confrimed that Mr Horton had been suspended on full pay while the matter was investigated.

Mr Horton has been at the newspaper for many years and the Guardian suggested he had been suspended a fortnight ago - right in the middle of the Olympics.

The Press Gazette quoted colleagues of Mr Horton who described him as "a well-liked and charismatic figure who is popular with his staff".

The industry journal also quoted another insider who suggested he would not be returning to the newspaper.
