DIGITAL RECRUITMENT NEWS 'career information and news for Digital professionals'

Older recruits 'need to learn new skills'
28-08-2008

The perils of being left behind by technologically-skilled younger employees has been highlighted in a report.

Adweek focused on employees over the age of 40 - who work in the digital media industry - whose careers are stunted because they do not replenish their skills and keep abreast of innovation.

A traditional creative background is not enough any more, the article suggested.

Recruitment executive Susan Friedman said: "If [a] person embraces all the new forms of advertising, they'll be worth a lot."

Colleague Amy Hoover added that recruiters expect creative job candidates for interactive positions to have websites, online portfolios or to be able to supply links to their digital work.

Another recruiter went on to say: "If you're 45-plus and worked your entire career in an ad agency, you're going to struggle if you don't change.

"You must become an early adopter."

These skills include using the latest software, equipment and monitoring new ideas and trends.
