European newspapers in 'better financial shape' than US ones?

A newspaper editor has declared that the secret to the financial success of a newspaper is to offer a product people will pay for each day.

Kai Diekmann's comments were published in an interview in Business Week and reported upon again by Follow The Media wesbite, which took the discussion further.

It noted that while not all European newspapers were doing well, on the whole they are "performing better than their American counterparts".

"That may well be because this was one of the few times that Europeans saw the writing on the wall earlier than Americans and started their digital investments sooner," the website suggested.

It suggested that US businesses might want to concentrate on new avenues for profit, such as digital, rather than trying to cut costs in other ways - such as making people in media and digital media redundant.

For the last seven years Mr Diekmann has been the editor of the German newspaper Bild.
