BBC's digital budget "must be slashed"

A veteran television producer has claimed the BBC is involved in too many enterprises and it "makes no business sense".

Sir Antony Jay told Sky news that BBC Online should be sold off to become a commercial business.

He spoke following the publication of his report, entitled How To Save The BBC, which was produced for think-tank the Centre for Policy Studies.

His comments also come in the wake of an Ipsos Mori poll for the Guardian that found almost half the population does not believe the licence fee offers good value for money, Sky stated.

"Let them sell [BBC News Online] off," he said. "Let them operate it commercially."

"The BBC is doing masses of things these days it's got absolutely no business doing."

The BBC website's budget was busted by almost £25 million last year through poor financial management, the BBC Trust said recently.
