Google 'to enter UK mobile market'
24-09-2007

Internet search giant Google could be set to expand into the mobile sector after Ofcom's announcement of the possible deregulation of the mobile broadband sector.

Under the proposals announced last week, the 2G mobile platform would be free of current regulation in an effort to introduce faster mobile broadband but Ofcom would allow it to be tradable, allowing other operators to use the service.

According to the Guardian, bosses at Google see this announcement as a way into the UK mobile phone market as it is set to bid $4.6 billion (£2.3 billion) for a similar platform in the US next year. Any bidding on the platform would be of benefit to the digital industry in the UK.

The 2G mobile platform was handed to the two original mobile phone companies, Vodafone and Cellnet, now O2, in 1985 to allow them to develop the technology.

Google currently has two office branches in the UK, in London and Manchester.
