BBC has revealed plans to develop a new service to compete with iTunes with download fees for old and new shows.  The shows of the currently titled ‘Project Barcelona’ will be priced at £1.89 per show.

KnowHow Movies was released by Dixon’s yesterday. The non-subscription based streaming and downloading site is only available on PCs & Macs so far, though there is an acknowledgement of Mobile Devices, Smart TVs and Gaming Devices becoming available to use soon, on their site.

This week Plan UK, the not-for-profit organization, has created a outdoor display advertisement on Oxford Street, that uses a camera to scan pedestrian faces and determine their gender, only showing the advert to women. Whilst Unilever have announced that they will put online marketing at the heart of their Sure campaign.

New Initiative

This week the short-list for the Paypal etail awards has been announced. Asos, Mr Porter and BrandAlley UK feature on the lists, among many others. BrandAlley has become the first UK private sales site to launch a mobile platform, with an aim to have 10% of revenue through mobile in the next year.

New Initiatives

The Huffington Post is due to launch an online live TV channel, with about 12 hours of programs, 5 days a week, so far being likened to a never-ending talk show. Meanwhile the Gov.uk site opens for public trial this week. It is so they can consolidate all the government service sites currently spread over multiple domains. The new site should save £50m per year.

Pure’s subscription-based music service has launched. They are offering a free trial for the cloud based service. Google has revealed a new ‘unified’ Terms of Service Agreement, which will be in place as of March.

This week, the Lovefilm-Netflix war continues as ABC signs with Lovefilm. Big disruptions occurred on the web across the world when websites ‘blackedout’ to protest against SOPA & PIPA , whilst Mark Zuckerberg blogged about his outrage, leaving Facebook un-disrupted.

New Initiatives

The Guardian today, starts its £9.99 monthly subscription for its iPad app content. It is unlike its iPhone app, which allows 3 stories to be read for free before requiring a monthly subscription. However there is some speculation at the success of this new paid content, since the guardian.co.uk website is still free for all content, which may drive iPad users to their site instead of their app.

A happy new year to everyone!

To kick-start 2012, Starbucks has now bought its Pay-by-app feature to the UK for iPhone users, but they must have a loyalty card to be able to open or use an account. An Android version is not on the market as of yet, but is expected to be released soon.
