Bringing Home the Business

There was good news for business this week as Virgin Media said it would be offering 150mbps broadband to customers next year. This really ups the ante for BT, which has been slowly rolling out its 21st Century Network (21CN). It also demonstrates that competition in the broadband provision space really does help develop digital media, which depends heavily on broadband Internet to accommodate the huge data levels involved. Those kinds of speeds for... [Read More...]

2009 Digital Industry Predictions

Digital platforms are enjoying unprecedented interest and investment at a time of wider economic gloom. Tim Smith, co-founder of London-based digital recruitment and executive search firm Bearing Partnership, explains why he believes the industry will avoid the worst of the Credit Crunch and how players in the digital industry can ensure they make the most of the opportunity the current interest in digital platforms provides. The Internet seems to... [Read More...]

Activity in the market

In the last few days alone we’ve seen some high-profile digital positions filled, which points to healthy activity within the Digital media sector. Bigmouthmedia, Five and Yahoo, to name just a few, have all announced senior digital appointments. More good news emerged this week from tracking firm Affiliate Window, whose survey found that a third of Marketing Managers (31 per cent) feel the biggest challenge facing them in 2009 is the plethora... [Read More...]

Role Model – Wider Downturn Doesn’t Mean Career on Ice

It’s understandable that in the current economic climate digital professionals may want to sit tight rather than look for their next career move. However, the digital market is, for all the doom and gloom stories, faring very well at the moment, so digital professionals need not throw their career plan out of the window. For example, French advertising group Publicis told the Financial Times this week that it anticipates double-digit growth this... [Read More...]

Critical Week for Online Media

This week was a major week for online news as a number of print publications cut their staff, with some – such as the Financial Times – switching resources to digital. The increasing decline of print media in favour of the Web is good news for the digital media workforce, as it means established names and emerging new media players alike will be looking for designers, copywriters and digital marketing specialists. As well as the FT cutting... [Read More...]

A Tangled Web – When Online Job Boards Just Aren’t Enough

The Times this week reported that hackers had managed to steal the personal details of millions of job seekers listed on the Monster.co.uk online recruitment website. This not only represents a worrying breach of trust for Monster’s subscriber base, but also puts into context the overall value of online job boards during the employment-seeking process.  Whilst the economy continues to shrink, there will definitely be a general feeling that if you... [Read More...]

Mobile World Congress Points to Positive Digital Future

The mobile industry met this week in Barcelona for the annual GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) and although delegate numbers were around ten per cent down on last year, there’s no ignoring the rise and rise of digital services over mobile. While handset manufacturers are predicted to have a rocky year, with sales down around five per cent in 2009 (Gartner), mobile services are enjoying a recession-busting rise in sales, with one mobile ad community... [Read More...]

Web 2.0 Brings Common Sense Back Into Fashion

In light of the recent high profile sackings in the UK over comments apparently made on social network Facebook, a number of blogs have emerged in the last week advocating civil liberties and that employers should not judge candidates by content they find out about them on social networking sites.  Whilst I applaud this sentiment, the fact is that the interview process has always been considered a less-than-perfect way of making a hiring decision.... [Read More...]
